CR: Discovering Hope

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me…Psalm 23:4

Many of us come to Celebrate Recovery because we find ourselves in the valley of the shadow of death. We look up and see the foreboding slopes on either side of the valley and we feel hopeless. We don’t know how to climb out of the valley. We come to CR looking for hope.

We each face different situations in our valleys. Some people are enslaved in their valley of addictions. They may literally face death or the loss of significant relationships because of their addictions. Others stumble through a valley where they are consumed by fear or anger. These emotions control every aspect of their lives and harm many of their relationships. Some people limp through their valley, having been crippled by abuse. They wonder if they will ever find the way out of the shadows. For others, the valley is an endless journey of living with and loving an addict. It is a journey of uncertainty, disappointment and hopelessness. Although each situation is unique, all of the situations have one thing in common – a person desperate for hope.

Thanks to the ministry of CR we are able to look up from our valley and see people who are scaling the steep slopes. In their faces we see the hope we are searching for. We grasp onto an extended hand and take our first step up the rocky path of recovery. As we continue to ascend the valley walls we become aware of the rope each hopeful person is clinging to. When we ask, they tell us about Jesus. We learn that our certain hope is in His power. We grab onto the only rope that can truly save us. We look up and see that the rope of Jesus Christ is the only way out of our valley. It is the rope that can save us from slipping back into the dark shadows. Taking one last glance behind us we realize that the rope extends all the way into the valley. It was always there for us. Jesus was always there, waiting for us to acknowledge His presence. He has always been guiding us through the valley of the shadow of death. He is our perfect hope. Those who cling to Him are blessed. Those who find Jesus discover hope.
