People Helping People Training
Lay Counseling Training Begins
People Helping People registration for Fall 2010 is closed. Please email lidia@fbcnj.org for inquiries.
People Helping People (PHP) is a lay counseling training program at FBC that aims to equip believers in our body with the basic concepts and methods of biblical counseling. It is a three-level program that spans three nine-week semesters – with various options regarding time commitment, depending on the goal of the student (see below).
Level One will run from September to November, Level Two will run from January to March, and Level Three will run from April to June. Classes are taught by Lidia Mocelo, who is FBC’s Director of Counseling and Recovery Services and responsible for much of the organization involving our Celebrate Recovery Ministry.
Who is it for?
This training program is required for anyone contemplating a leadership position in Celebrate Recovery or another FBC counseling or support group ministry. However, even if you do not wish to be in a position of leadership, you are still welcome to participate in one or all of the levels and learn from the training without obligation to be involved in any FBC ministry.
What will this class accomplish?
It will…
- Provide a biblical model of change that shows the connection between our heart (the “root”) and our actions and emotions (the “fruit”)
- Illustrate how lasting change occurs only through the cross of Jesus Christ
- Present an approach for personal ministry that is practical and wise and incarnates the love of Christ to those in need
- Demonstrate how the Bible speaks powerfully to temptation, suffering, and relationships with grace and hope
- Stimulate a desire for continuing growth in our own relationship with the Lord so that He might use us more effectively in the lives of others
What is the time commitment?
For Level One: The classes to complete this level of the training program will meet on Tuesdays from 7:00-9:30 for nine weeks. They will begin on September 21st and end on November 16th.
For the entire PHP program: Anyone interested in a position of leadership in an FBC counseling ministry must complete all three levels, which span three nine-week semesters from September to June. However, if you are interested in this training for your own personal benefit or ministry outside FBC, then you are under no obligation to complete all three levels; you are welcome to get your feet wet in Level One, which this first nine week session, and then evaluate whether you would like to continue the training.
What Materials Will I Need?
The required text for Level One is called Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands by Paul Tripp. If possible, it will be helpful to purchase this book before class begins so that you are able to keep up with assignments.
